Who: Amy, Jalen, Eli, Ashlyn, Larkin
What: Story time!
Where: Rainbow's End
When: Wednesday, June 27

Jalen entered the bedroom carrying a giggling Ashlyn over his shoulder. Amy was already curled up on the bed with Eli, story book open as she thumbed through it.

"Not this one...where is it..."

"Sure you're up to this?" He set the little girl gently on the bed, smiling as she tackled her aunt in a hug. Amy grinned, hugging her back. Eli glanced up at his father, thumb in his mouth, before snuggling closer to his mother.

"Yeah. I'm not that tired today, I can handle faeries and dragons. Well, fictional ones, anyway. Don't forget Larkin."

"Wouldn't dream of it."

Jalen raised a hand in a mock salute and departed. When he returned a few minutes later, he paused in the doorway and just watched, Larkin tugging on his hair. Ashlyn had curled up on Amy's other side and was playing with the charms on her aunt's bracelet while she chattered. Eli was watching his cousin with rapt attention. Amy laughed, gave each child a kiss on the forehead, then glanced over at her husband.

"Took you long enough."

"Song wanted to keep her to herself initially, but I convinced her you'd do awful things to me if I came back without her."

"Turn you into a tuna, maybe."

This got giggles out of the older kids, then Ashlyn held out her arms, wanting to hold Larkin.

"Please? Won't drop her."

Jalen passed the happy baby to her. She cradled her gently, beaming.

"Everybody ready?" Amy asked, having finally found the story she was looking for. Eli yelled 'Yeth' around his thumb. Jalen turned to leave, then paused.

"Room for one more?"

His wife's face lit up. "Always."

Jalen took a seat next to his son, and Amy began the story.

"Once upon a time..."

Just don't let Song find out you let a 3-year-old hold her baby.
Otherwise, you shall be subjected to silent glares of death until you are rendered immobile by guilt and fear.

Just so you know.

Yeah, so you know Ashlyn's mother does not let her hold the baby either. Even though most likely nothing would go wrong, especially now that Larkin's sitting up and Ashlyn's a very responsible kiddo for 3.

Sorry, I'm pretty sure this is Robin and me as infant and preschool teachers talking: I've got the kid's Larkin's age in my class, and she used to have the one's Ashlyn's age (now she has Eli's age group), so we're a touch more realistic here. Sorry to rant.
